Buying or selling a house, talking about a will, or using 'Estate Planning' language can leave people in an anxious panic. We want you to know the value of planning ahead and good legal advice in these situations. We will walk you through the steps, analyze your needs, and draft and explain the appropriate documents in plain language. We are inspired by making you comfortable and educating you on the importance of having your wishes met. Although we're not able to read the future, we are passionate about helping you anticipate your needs and the needs of your family. A legacy of love includes planning ahead so your family doesn’t have to guess about your wishes.
Whether you're creating or dissolving, buying or selling, changes in business involve a lot of paper. We want to help you make sense of everything that comes along with those transitions, without the insane costs that come with lengthy transactions. Our experience covers all business types, but we are uniquely qualified to work with self-regulated professionals and regulated health professionals. Let us guide you through the legal side of your practice so you can focus on your passion.
When dealing with legal red tape, it's good to have a friend with scissors. You may be in a situation where you just don't know what to do next and I can help you figure that out. Once we determine the best path for you, we can discuss the next steps or we will offer you a referral to someone who specializes in your specific needs - you deserve the best possible legal help and if that involves referring you out to our extensive network, we can do that. Of course, we would prefer to keep you here, but we won't be selfish.
I have worked in full service firms, elite litigation boutiques, in specialized corporate commercial practice, as in-house counsel for a technology company in the oil and gas sector, in regulatory health practice, as registrar and complaints director for health regulatory colleges in Alberta, and for the last 15 years as owner and principal of Baruss Legal. I have been called to the bar in both Ontario (2002) and Alberta (2005). I consider myself extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to serve in so many different ways.
We are a young Christian family that loves the outdoors, our friends, and most of all God. We split our time between the mountains, work, and our church, and we chose the location of our home and office in Calgary's Southwest to reflect that balance we strive to maintain. I am passionate about people and service, and I take that passion to my business, which is how Baruss Legal came to be.
Irfan Kanji was called to the Alberta Bar in 2020, and focuses primarily on real estate, corporate/commercial, and wills and estates. Prior to law school, Irfan worked in the fields of finance and banking in Calgary, where he acquired a business acumen which he brings to his practice at Baruss Legal. Irfan grew up in a family of small business owners, and has learned from a young age the importance of developing strong relationships in business dealings. Irfan brings this to his practice and strives to develop long-lasting relationships with his clients.
Irfan has a passion for travel, which he believes has contributed to his understanding of the intricate differences between cultures. Irfan’s passion for travel has taken him to every corner of the world, including East Africa (where he recently conquered Mount Kilimanjaro), Chile, South East Asia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, and various European countries. When not in the office, you can find Irfan on a soccer field; cheering on his beloved Arsenal FC; indulging in the foodie scene in Calgary with his wife, Jazmeen; or spending time outdoors with their two pups.
With almost three decades of experience in all areas of law, Tracie brings both depth and versatility to her work as a paralegal. Her expertise is matched only by her sense of humor — she’s known for keeping things light even in high-pressure moments, including quipping that she’d prefer to be in the witness protection program rather than featured in a bio.
Kaela has been working as a real estate paralegal for over twenty years and has been with Baruss Legal since its inception. She prides herself on attention to detail and ensuring that our clients have all the information they need to fully understand the work we’re doing. While Kaela works as a contractor for Baruss Legal, she is truly part of the BLegal family and Cherie says Kaela is her (not-so-secret) weapon. Paralegal Extraordinaire, Amazing Human Being, and knower of all things real estate.
Katie has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Calgary. She joined Baruss Legal part-time while a student, but after realizing that Katie was the doer of all things Cherie didn’t know how to do, Katie quickly became a full-time employee until starting law school at the University of Victoria in September of 2025. We hope she will come back to Baruss Legal and join the firm as a new lawyer once her studies are done.
We're working. We're here. We want to help you.
